What is the SPA?
The Student Police Academy is a program that provides Newtown High School students with a firsthand overview of the law enforcement functions of the Newtown Police and how they relate to the criminal justice system in general. Through classroom and hands on instruction, the students will learn what it is like to be a Police Officer.

When is the SPA?
The Academy is usually held during the months of March, April, and May. The class meets each Wednesday. The last class session of the CPA will be a graduation ceremony. The academy meets a total of ten times.

Where is the SPA held?
TheClases are held at the Newtown High School, Field Trips will be taken.

How long is each class?
Each class will start at 4:00pm and end at 6:00pm.

What will I learn at the SPA?
The curriculum is a basic introduction to law enforcement related topics. Most of these topics are the same as are taught to Police Officers at the CT Police Academy.

Below is a sample curriculum.

Week 1: Tour of Police Station and Dispatch/911 Center
Week 2: Becoming a Police Officer, and Patrol Operations
Week 3: Domestic Violence
Week 4: Police Canine Demonstration
Week 5: Crime Scene/Fingerprinting
Week 6: Firearms instruction - Police Weapons
Week 7: Trip to State Police Firing Range
Week 8: Juvenile/School Law
Week 9: Crime Prevention
Week 10: Graduation Ceremony

Is there a Ride Along?
Yes!
Each student will have the opportunity to ride with an officer on patrol. The student will not be placed in any danger during this 2 hour tour.

Who teaches the classes?
The majority of the instructors are Newtown Police Officers. There may be a few guest speakers from outside the Department.

Who can apply for the SPA?
The Student Police Academy is free and open to any High School student.
Space is available for only 25 students, and preference will be given to Newtown students who have not attended a previous Student Police Academy.

How can I apply for the SPA?

All that is required is a completed application: Avaialble from the Career Center.

How will I know if I am granted a seat? You will be contacted approximately one week after your application is received to confirm your attendance. Each prospective student must be able to attend at least seven of the classes in order to receive a certificate of completion.

What if I have questions about the SPA?
