A typical day for a Newtown Department of Police Services Patrol Officer begins with shift roll call. Roll call is conducted to ensure all necessary personnel are present and that any pertinent information is forwarded to all officers prior to the beginning of their assigned shift. Officers are then provided with their assigned sector of Town (Newtown is currently divided into five sectors), their assigned patrol vehicle, and are assigned any directed patrol or radar assignments for the shift.
After roll call patrol officers then load their assigned patrol vehicles with the equipment necessary to conduct police operations and begin patrol of their assigned sectors. During each patrol shift, officers are responsible for conducting deterrence patrols in their assigned sectors, motor vehicle enforcement, radar enforcement, and responding to all calls for service in their assigned sector(s).
To enhance the communication and understanding between the Newtown Department of Police Services and the community the Newtown Department of Police Services conduct two orientation programs. The Student Police Academy is provided through the School Resource Officer Program at the Newtown High School and is open to Newtown High School Students. This program introduces the students to the general job of the a police officer, and some specific functions of Newtown Police Officers. Most of the instructors for this program are current certified Newtown Police Officers. An adult version of this program is offered also. This program is called the Citizen Police Academy. The Citizen Police Academy introduces Newtown residents to the information as the Student Police Academy in a longer more probative manner.
As with the Student Police Academy most of the instructors for the Citizen Police Academy are current certified Newtown Police Officers. Both programs offer additional instruction by qualified instructors within related fields to round out the orientation process. The aim of both programs is to increase the understanding and dialog between the Newtown Department of Police Services and the Community that they serve.
In addition to the many on-duty services that are performed by the members of the Newtown Department of Police Services for the Newtown community officers also participate in many community activities such as the Special Olympics Torch Relay, American Cancer Society Relay for Life, and the Toys for Tots program.
