K-9 Unit
The Newtown Department of Police Services K-9 Unit is currently made up of one sworn police officer, a certified police dog, and is supervised by a lieutenant. The Sworn Officer (handler) is Officer Andrew Stinson, his partner is Baro, and they are supervised by Operations Lieutenant George Sinko.
Baro was certified in April of 2005 and has been deployed as a patrol/narcotics working dog since that time. Officer Stinson and Baro are annually certified as a team and work as a team when deployed.
Baro is trained to detect the odors of marijuana, heroin, crack, cocaine, ecstasy, and all related paraphernalia. Baro is also able to track by scent. Baro is able to conduct area searches for people and articles. Baro is trained in evidence recovery, handler protection/suspect apprehension, as well as in narcotics detection.
Officer Stinson and K-9 Baro are available for public demonstrations by appointment. Please call 203-426-5841 and ask for Officer Stinson's voicemail. Leave a call back number with the dates, times, and organization that the demonstration will be conducted for. Officer Stinson will respond to your request and provide you with the necessary information to review your request.
