What is the CPA?
The Citizen Police Academy is a program that provides Newtown residents and business persons with a firsthand overview of the law enforcement functions of the Newtown Police and how they relate to the criminal justice system in general. Through classroom and hands on instruction, the students will learn what it is like to be a Police Officer.

When is the CPA?
The Academy is usually held during the months of March, April, and May. The class meets each Wednesday. The last class session of the CPA will be a graduation ceremony. The academy meets a total of ten times.

How long is each class?
Each class will start at 6:00pm and end at 9:00pm. There will be a twenty minute refreshment break in the middle of class.

What will I learn at the CPA?
The curriculum is a basic introduction to law enforcement related topics. Most of these topics are the same as are taught to Police Officers at the CT Police Academy.

Is there a Ride Along?
Yes!
Each student will have the opportunity to ride with an officer on patrol. The student will not be placed in any danger during this 4 hour tour.

Who teaches the classes?
The majority of the instructors are Newtown Police Officers. There may be a few guest speakers from outside the Department.

Who can apply for the CPA?
The Citizen Police Academy is free and open to anyone over the age of 18.
Space is available for only 25 students, and preference will be given to Newtown residents and business professionals who have not attended a previous Citizen Police Academy.

All that is required is a completed application.
Applications are available at the Newtown Police Headquarters at 3 Main Street Newtown, Ct., as well as On-Line at the following link:
