In the year 1705, a company of men from the then important settlement of Stratford and Milford bough a tract of land from the Indians living on a stream called Pootatuck which soon after was Incorporated as a town and in distinction of the old town of Stratford, from which it was taken, it was called NEWTOWN.

It is one of the lovely hill towns of our wonderful state of Connecticut. its founders had an eye for beauty on locating it on a ridge, which commands a picturesque view.  Its founders had the idea of dignity in laying out a wide main street. The departments patch is a symbol of the historic center of Newtown and the famous flagpole which sits in the middle of Main street.

Within a year, the small settlement boasted forty-eight families, who yearned and hungered to become a full fledged town with a such privileges the other colonial towns enjoyed. The general assembly meeting in New Haven so endowed Newtown on
October 11, 1711.

Whereupon the townspeople immediately held a town meeting and promptly elected a town clerk, constables (police officers),and other officials.

Today the Department consists of Forty-Seven Sworn personnel in the Administrative Services, Operations Bureau, Detective Division, Patrol Division and Five Civilians. They are responsible for the Town which encompasses an area 60 square miles populated by 29,000 people.
