The Probate Court for the District of Newtown is one of 123 Courts in the State of Connecticut. The P robate Judge is elected to office for a four-year term.
Probate Courts have jurisdiction over the following matters:
Probating of estates, testate or intestate (with or without a will)
Testamentary Trusts
Living Trusts (limited jurisdiction)
Guardianships of mentally retarded persons
Guardianship of the estate of a minor
Guardianship of the person of a minor
Termination of parental rights
Finalization of adoptions
Conservatorship (voluntary and involuntary) of person and/or estate of incapable adults
Granting of name changes
Commitment of adults and children for mental illness
Commitment of adults for treatment of drug and alcohol dependency
Processing of passport applications
