The Planning and Community Development Office is located in the Security Building on the Fairfield Hills campus at 28 Trades Lane. The Office is staffed by a Director (Town Planner) and a part time clerical assistant. Activities carried out by the Department help to coordinate and facilitate land use planning, community development projects and economic growth.
In addition to working closely with the Land Use Agency and other Town Departments and agencies, the Director works under the guidance of the First Selectman and provides planning staff services directly to the Planning and Zoning Commission and Economic Development Commission.
The Newtown Housing Rehabilitation Program is administered by the Planning and Community Development Director. The Director provides oversight for the Small Cities Community Development Block Grant Program and is the Newtown Fair Housing Officer. All questions that pertain to community development programs and questions concerning fair housing or housing discrimination should be directed to Elizabeth Stocker at 203-270-9415.
Ongoing activities of the Director include review of subdivision, zone change and amendment applications brought before the Planning and Zoning Commission, management of the Economic Development Commission marketing program, maintenance of local economic and demographic trends and administration of the Newtown Housing Rehabilitation Program.
Current projects include the update and reorganization of the zoning regulations, project manager for the Newtown Technology Park , administration of the Town's STEAP grants and local coordinator for the 2010 Census. The Director is also active with the Sandy Hook neighborhood in their efforts to revitalize the business district.
